This spirulina smoothie with banana, orange, and mango is a nutrient dense smoothie full of vitamins, minerals and protein. It is a delicious way to start the day and only takes 5 minutes to make.

I like to call this spirulina smoothie my mermaid smoothie. It is made with spirulina powder, a blue-green algae, which gives it the most gorgeous color. Spirulina is filled with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

This smoothie also has mango, banana and orange inside, which adds even more nutrients and fiber to the recipe. It also adds a nice sweetness to the whole recipe.

  • Spirulina is a complete protein. According to healthline, 1 Tablespoon of spirulina has 4 grams of protein, along with thiamin, copper and iron.

Recipe ingredients

Ingredients needed to make spirulina smoothie.
  • an orange– a fresh navel orange; this helps add liquid to the smoothie.
  • frozen mango– good quality frozen chunks of mango.
  • a frozen banana– you can freeze a ripe banana the night before or buy frozen banana.
  • spirulina powder– I like the spirulina powder from Nuts.com.
  • almond milk– make sure it doesn’t have added sugar and isn’t flavored.

Additions/ Substitutions

  • Instead of almond milk, you can use any milk of choice.
  • You can add hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs and nut butter on top of your smoothie.
  • You can add nut butter to the smoothie itself before blending.

How to make this recipe

It’s easy! You put all of the ingredients ( frozen banana, frozen mango, a fresh peeled orange, spirulina powder, and almond milk) into a blender and mix! You can add more almond milk if you want it to be more liquidy.

OR you could turn this into a spirulina smoothie bowl and put it into a bowl and top it with goodies such as chia seeds, cacao nibs, and almond butter. YUM.

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in both fresh and salt water. It is high in protein and is a good source of antioxidants, iron and vitamins B1 and B2.

It is also said to help remove heavy metals from you body and helps reduce inflammation.
Because of these health benefits, I’ve made a conscious effort to add spirulina to my diet.

What does spirulina taste like?

It smells like seaweed and it smells a little smokey. It tastes partly like seaweed and partly smokey. It’s unique to say the least.

Its a good taste, though. If you are worried about the taste,  you honestly can’t taste it in this smoothie. For me, the orange actually takes center stage.

Should I use blue or green spirulina?

Honestly any one works. I personally think green is better because it has a higher nutritional value and thus offers more health benefits.

  • Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
  • This recipe yields 3 cups of smoothie. This should could serve 1 or 2 people depending on the size of the smoothie.
