This Smooth Paleo Chocolate Almond Butter is basically melt-in-your-mouth roasted almond chocolate liquid gold, that is soooo addicting and delicious. It’s what I imagine an almond version of Nutella tastes like.
This deliciousness is made of warm roasted almonds that are blended until incredibly smooth and creamy. Then a mixture of melted chocolate, coconut oil and vanilla is added to the mix, as well as honey, to add a bit of sweetness. Once all the flavors have melded together, olive or coconut oil is added to really smooth the mixture out.

Why this recipe works
- It is great for those allergic to hazelnuts. I am allergic so I have never been able to try Nutella.
- It’s super creamy and smooth, and the roasted almonds add a “nutty” flavor to the almond butter, in a really satisfying way.
- The chocolate flavor puts everything just over the top.
Recipe ingredients
- almonds
- chocolate chips
- vanilla
- coconut oil
- cocoa powder
- honey
- olive oil
Step by step instructions
I blended the almond butter in my Ninja Blender and it worked like a charm! It only took 8 minutes to get super smooth and liquidy. Wayyyyy smoother than any of my other tries.
Then, when I added the melted chocolate and cocoa powder it stayed super smooth. Once I added the honey it did thicken up, which is where the olive oil comes in. Make sure to use an extra virgin, light tasting olive oil. Or use coconut oil. But once I added that in, it was smoooooth city.
Prior attempts
The first time, I added the melted chocolate and cocoa powder too soon. The almond butter was a but thick and then never thinned out after that. Look how thick!
The second time, I used a mini food processor and it took me over 20 minutes to get a semi-decent texture. My poor food processor got really hot and tired. Then, after adding the honey, it thickened up. This version was still good but still a bit too thick for my liking.
One thing I learned was that honey does tend to thicken the mixture up. But I have a good solution that I learned in version three… which is this recipe!
The key word here is SMOOTH. And after making so many versions, I learned that this is possible, you just need the right tools and ingredients.
It’s true, making almond butter can be challenging. If you are looking for the ultimate almond butter recipe guide, check out this Almond Butter post by Texanerin.

Smooth Paleo Chocolate Almond Butter
Ingredients
- 2 cups almonds
- 1/3 cup enjoy life chocolate chips
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 tsp coconut oil, , in its hardened form
- 1 Tbs cocoa powder
- 2 tsp honey
- 3 Tbs extra virgin light tasting olive oil
Instructions
- Put 2 cups of almonds onto a cookie sheet and roast for 10 minutes at 400 degrees.
- Pour the roasted almonds into a blender or high powered food processor. I used a Ninja blender. Mix until the almonds turn into smooth almost liquidy almond butter. In my ninja blender, this takes 8 minutes. Though it can take up to 20 minutes using other appliances. Note: You may think that you have “over mixed” the almonds when the mixture becomes thick, but that isn’t true, keep going.
- Mix 1/3 cup of the chocolate chips, 1 tsp vanilla, and 2 tsp of coconut oil together and heat in the microwave until melted. Only heat for 20-30 seconds at a time, and then mix. You don’t want the mixture to burn and thicken. ( I only heated mine for 30 seconds total)
- Mix the chocolate mixture into the almond butter and blend. Add 1 Tbs of cocoa powder and blend.
- Then add 2 tsp honey to the almond butter and mix. (You’ll notice that honey thickens the almond butter up a bit). Then add 3 Tbs extra light tasting olive oil or melted coconut oil and blend.
- Yields 2.5 cups of almond butter.

Oh my! This looks dreamy (and dangerous)! HA!
This sounds absolutely divine! I wouldn’t be able to stop eating it! I think it’s perfection for drizzling over warm crepes!
This almond butter looks so good! It sounds perfectly chocolatey, and I can see how you would be eating it straight from the jar. Yum!!
Thanks Kimberly. I can’t stop eating it from the jar!
I could totally eat this out of the jar, too, because YUM! You’re totally onto something here, and I need to try it immediately.
🙂 Do ittttttttttt
Holy smokes, this sounds so good! I used to love nutella, but won’t buy it anymore because it’s made with palm oil. This looks like a great replacer!
Homemade is the best way 🙂
Yum – This looks BETTER than Nutella!
Thankssss!!!
My husband LOVES chocolate covered almonds. I will have to make a batch of this up so he can have that wonderful taste on his morning toast!!
Then he will love this! 🙂
Amazing. So nice to have a peanut free option similar to nutella and absent the preservatives and chemicals companies put in their food to lengthen shelf life to make more money. taste great, smooth and filling. thanks!
You are welcome! That’s my biggest thing, not having preservatives or chemicals inside!
YUM!!! That looks so decadent and delicious, I would eat it straight from the jar 😀
That’s the best way to eat it!
I don’t have any nut allergy so I enjoy all the chocolate hazelnut spreads, store bought and homemade. But I am loving this version made with roasted almonds (always in plentiful supply at our place). It looks amazing and I’d love to spread it on my toast!
SO good on toast!! I’m jealous you don’t have a nut allergy!
