This Creamed Peas recipe is a beloved family recipe of mine. It is a Hungarian version of creamed peas that was made by my mother and my grandmother… and now me!

It is made by creating a simple sauce from butter, flour, and milk that is seasoned with nutmeg and lemon juice. Then, canned peas are added to the sauce creating the most comforting and tasty creamed peas dish.

I’ve also provided a dairy-free version of this recipe to this post, which is just as delicious!

Ingredients needed to make these Creamed Peas:

  • butter
  • flour
  • milk
  • salt and pepper
  • nutmeg
  • canned peas
  • optional- lemon juice

As I mentioned, the sauce in this recipe is very simple. I think simple is best in recipes like this.

The extra flavor comes from the seasoning with is salt, pepper and nutmeg. My family always sprinkles some lemon juice on top of our creamed peas before serving them.

I would try it both with and without lemon juice to see what you prefer. 🙂

Ingredients needed to make a dairy-free version of these Creamed Peas:

  • olive oil
  • flour
  • almond milk
  • salt and pepper
  • nutmeg
  • canned peas
  • optional- lemon juice

I have had to be completely dairy-free a few times in the last two years. I really missed this Creamed Peas recipe and tested out making it without dairy.

I found that it works great to replace the butter with olive oil or a dairy-free butter replacement like one from Earth Balance.

I really like using almond milk instead of regular milk here.

And the seasoning can remain the same. No need to miss out on creamed peas despite not being able to have dairy!

Tips on how to make them:

This is one of those recipes where you don’t necessarily need a recipe, you just add more flour or more milk as needed, however I created one because I love following recipes myself and it is easier for a recipe to turn out well if you are following the right amounts etc.

To start, you add your butter to the pan and heat it until it is melted. Or you just add your oil to the pan. Then, you add the flour to the butter or oil and mix it with a whisk or fork until it clumps.

Then you add 1 cup of milk or almond milk and whisk it, breaking up the flour clumps as you go. You need to let the mixture boil and thicken.

Then you add another cup of milk or almond milk, whisk it and let it thicken again.

At this point, if the sauce is thick enough, you can season it with salt, pepper and nutmeg.

However, if it isn’t thick enough, add a little bit more milk or almond milk.

Don’t worry if you have added too much milk, you can always add a little flour to thicken the mixture back up.

It really is a balance between the right amount of flour and milk / almond milk.

Once your sauce is as thick as you want it, you can add your peas.

I personally love eating these Creamed Peas with lemon juice sprinkled on top, along with extra nutmeg. But try it without lemon first and then do a test area with lemon to see if you like it like that.

A delicious and cozy creamed peas recipe made by creating a smooth rich sauce from butter, flour, and milk that is seasoned with nutmeg. A dairy-free version of this recipe is provided as well.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbs butter, (or olive oil for a dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk, (or almond milk for a dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 can peas
  • optional- lemon juice

Instructions

  • Add butter to the pan and heat over medium low heat. Once it is melted, add the flour and mix with a whisk or fork until it clumps.
Note: if you are using olive oil, just add the flour to it after a few seconds.
  • Add 1 cup milk or almond milk and then whisk, breaking up clumps as you go. Let the mixture boil and thicken while whisking. Then let it sit for a few minutes. The sauce will be very thick. Then Add another 1 cup of milk or almond milk, whisk, and let it sit. Whisk every so often until sauce reaches desired thickness.
  • Add salt, pepper and nutmeg and mix.
  • Turn off heat.
  • Add 1 can of peas and mix. Season with more salt or nutmeg to taste.
  • Optional- After serving, sprinkle lemon juice on top. Test this out with a small area to make sure you like it first.

Notes

Note: when you are making the sauce, if you think it is too thick, add a little bit of milk. If you think the sauce is too thin, then add a little flour and increase the heat a little. BUT be careful because often time if you wait longer, the sauce will thicken up on it’s own.
