Creamed Peas in a bowl with butter on top.

This cream peas recipe is a beloved family recipe of mine. It is a Hungarian version of creamed peas that was made by my mother and my grandmother, and now me!

It is made by creating a simple sauce from butter, flour, and milk that is seasoned with nutmeg and lemon juice. Then, canned peas are added to the sauce creating the most comforting and tasty creamed peas dish. I’ve also provided a dairy-free version of this recipe to this post, which is just as delicious!

Eat these peas, with some grilled salmon, healthy chicken burgers, or turkey oat meatballs on the side for a complete meal.

What makes this recipe great

  • You only need a handful of ingredients to have the ultimate comfort food.
  • You can make regular creamed peas or you can make Vegan creamed peas.
  • It’s a great way to add peas to your diet.
  • It comes together quickly and easily.

Recipe ingredients

Ingredients needed to make creamed peas.
  • Butter– use a good quality butter in this recipe because it helps flavor the sauce.
  • Flour– unbleached all purpose flour works great here.
  • Milk– I like to use regular milk, but feel free to use whatever kind you have on hand.
  • Salt and pepper– this seasons the sauce and enhances the flavors.
  • Nutmeg– this is a key seasoning to the sauce and adds a sweet creaminess to it.
  • Canned peas– I like to use sweat peas, but use whichever peas you prefer.
  • Optional- lemon juice-I like to sprinkle it on top for extra flavor.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Additions/ Substitutions

  • To make a dairy-free Vegan version, use olive oil instead of butter.
  • To make a dairy-free Vegan version, use almond milk instead of regular milk.
  • You can use white beans instead of peas, which results in a delicious recipe.

Step by step instructions:

The sauce needed to make creamed peas.
Step 1

Step 1: Make the sauce. Add butter to the pan and heat it until it is melted. Or add oil to the pan. Then, add the flour to the butter or oil and mix it with a whisk or fork until it clumps.

Then add milk and whisk the sauce. Season it with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Expert tips

  • When making the sauce, you can easily make the consistency more or less thick. If you need to thicken it, add flour. If you need to thin it out, add more milk.
    • I recommend waiting before taking action because the sauce thickens on its own with time.
  • I prefer only salt, pepper and nutmeg in this sauce. Feel free to add garlic powder, paprika or sugar to change the taste to your liking.
  • Try the peas as they are, but then also try to add a sprinkle of lemon juice to see how you like the flavor.
