Simple recipes, especially simple Italian recipes, tend to be best. And this Whole30 & Paleo alla Vodka Sauce is living proof of that. This recipe is really just a base of cooked garlic, mixed into San Marzano tomatoes, and simmered with basil and coconut cream. Simple, creamy, and fresh.
Which makes this sauce taste wonderful on top of zoodles, sweet potato noodles, baked potatoes, grilled chicken, ground chicken… the list could go on and on!
That is actually why I am posting this Whole30 & Paleo alla Vodka Sauce recipe as a sauce only. Instead of paired with a protein or vegetable. It is just too good for me to choose!
I’ve been loving it with zoodles and grilled chicken…. just FYI. 🙂
(And if you want to make it with zoodles too, I find that spiralizing one zucchini is enough to feed two people… though you’ll still have lots of sauce leftover for any number of other delicious concoctions)
I have also been loving using San Marzano tomatoes in my cooking lately. There’s just a brightness to the flavor that really reminds me of Italy. Maybe it’s because the tomatoes are imported from Italy. 🙂
I’ve been really missing everything about Italy lately. Ok ok, maybe I’ve been missing the food most of all. And the sun. And the general vibes.
Which reminded me that I haven’t posted a travel post on my honeymoon, which was on the Amalfi Coast!
Ah, I’ve been wanting to post more travel posts on here, and to open up more. It can be surprisingly difficult to open your life up on the web, but since I love blogging, I realize that this is all a part of that.
So, be sure to keep an eye out for all the mouthwatering adventures from that trip. 🙂
Ok, back to this Whole30 & Paleo alla Vodka Sauce…Don’t worry, there is no vodka in here! Or dairy cream either. Which makes me wonder… is this an alla vodka sauce at all?
The pinkness and creaminess makes me think so. Plus the sweet yet tangy taste… it’s just a wonderful Whole30, Paleo, dairy-free version, if you ask me!
Let me know if you try it, and what you paired your sauce with! I’d love to know!
PS- I can only vouch for the flavor of this sauce if you are using coconut cream without preservatives in it. I tend to the think coconut cream with preservatives tastes strange. 🙂
Happy almost weekend!

Whole30 & Paleo alla Vodka Sauce
Ingredients
- 1/2 Tbs olive oil
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1.5 Tbs minced garlic, (this was from 4 cloves for me)
- one 28 ounce can San Marzano Peeled Tomatoes
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 cup canned coconut cream, (without preservatives) Savoy is my go-to
Instructions
- Heat 1/2 Tbs olive oil over medium heat in a sauté pan. Once the oil is hot, add the 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes and 1.5 Tbs minced garlic, mix and cook for 2-3 minutes, until the garlic is fragrant and tender.
- Add the San Marzano peeled tomatoes, 2 tsp dried basil, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/2 tsp onion powder to the pan. Mix, while breaking the tomatoes up into smaller pieces and then let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes. (If the sauce isn’t bubbling, increase the heat, then lower it back down to medium to let it simmer).
- Add the coconut cream to the pan, mix, and let everything simmer for 5 minutes.
- Serve over zoodles, or sweet potato noodles. This sauce is also great on top of grilled chicken.
